About AJ

I'm AJ, a babywearer!

Baby Slings by AJ is a home-based business that, in essence, created itself.

I've been sewing since I was a young girl.  My grandmother made her living as a seamstress, and my mom would occasionally make us outfits or dresses and would always mend or tailor our clothes.  For me, sewing was easy and fun.  It was exciting to wear items that I, myself, had created.  I did well enough to show my dresses and suits at the State Fair for 4-H.

Since then, I've made all sorts of things, mostly for fun or for the house, or to save a little money here and there.  For several years, I did most of my own adjustments to my military uniforms, and later did the same for my husband.

I am a new mom.  My son was born May 2009.  I started making baby slings because I saw how expensive they were.  I researched various  designs, fabrics, and eventually the rings.  I made a couple for myself and was thrilled to be able to wear my baby everywhere.  We were both so much happier, since it made life easier for us both!  He could be held, could nurse discreetly just about anywhere, and even fall asleep, while I still had my hands free to eat, do the shopping, laundry, email, or just about whatever I needed to do.

Around home in Florida, I got a few comments from time to time, usually older folks at the grocery story who thought my baby was cute.  When I went home to visit family in Illinois this Fall and wore my baby everywhere we went.  Just about each time we were out, someone would come up to me and comment about the sling.  They seemed to be fascinated with my babywearing and with my slings!  Since they were asking where I'd gotten such a carrier, I was proud to tell them I'd made it myself... sad, however, that I didn't have a business card with my email address on it for them to put in an order.

And so Baby Slings by AJ was born!

There's more to AJ than just being a mom and babywearer.
